- Written by leading experts in the field
About this book
A railway is a complex distributed engineering system: the construction of a new railway or the modernisation of a existing one requires a deep understanding of the constitutive components and their interaction, inside the system itself and towards the outside world. The former covers the various subsystems (featuring a complex mix of high power sources, sensitive safety critical systems, intentional transmitters, etc.) and their interaction, including the specific functions and their relevance to safety. The latter represents all the additional possible external victims and sources of electromagnetic interaction.
EMC thus starts from a comprehension of the emissions and immunity characteristics and the interactions between sources and victims, with a strong relationship to electromagnetics and to system modeling.

On the other hand, the said functions are achieved and preserved and their relevance for safety is adequately handled, if the related requirements are well posed andmanaged throughout the process from the beginning. The link is represented by standards and their correct application, as a support to analysis, testing and demonstration.

About the authors
Ade Ogunsola is a distinguished expert in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) with a focus on railway systems. He has served as an Adjunct Associate Professor in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, and holds a leadership position as Vice President within the Infrastructure Group at Parsons. His research encompasses standardization, RF engineering, and electromagnetic engineering, with a particular emphasis on EMC in rail transit systems. Ogunsola co-authored the book Electromagnetic Compatibility in Railways: Analysis and Management, which serves as a comprehensive resource for understanding and managing EMC challenges in railway environments.
Andrea Mariscotti is an Assistant Professor at the University of Genoa, Italy, specializing in EMC applied to industrial, military, and transportation systems. His expertise extends to system assurance, functional safety, power quality, and electrical measurements. Mariscotti has made significant contributions to the field through numerous publications and co-authored works, including Electromagnetic Compatibility in Railways: Analysis and Management, which addresses EMC challenges in railway systems. Additionally, he authored EMC in Railways – Electromagnetic Field Measurement, focusing on measurement techniques for EMC in railway environments.
