A book entitled Lightning Physics and Lightning Protection

Lightning Physics and Lightning Protection

Authors: Eduard M. Bazelyan, Yuri P. Raizer

About this book

Lightning Physics and Lightning Protection presents a comprehensive and up-to-date review of lightning, including its hazards and protection techniques.
The authors first discuss the effectiveness of conventional protective measures, supply technical advice and practical recommendations, and explore the prospects for the preventive control of a lightning leader, followed by a discussion of the initiation of a leader and return stroke and subsequent components. After including measurements useful for understanding lightning and its effects, the book describes the mechanism of lightning discharge processes. It then examines the effects of large aircraft, high-voltage lines, and other high-altitude constructions on lightning trajectory and leader attraction. The book concludes by studying the action of lightning’s electrical and magnetic fields and the lightning current on industrial premises, power transmission lines, underground communications, aircraft and their electrical circuits, and the induction of a dangerous overvoltage.
A clear, straightforward, and systematic presentation of complicated material, Lightning Physics and Lightning Protection provides deep insight into the physics of lightning, simple analytical estimates, and a detailed illustration of effects by computer simulation, making this resource essential for those who investigate lightning phenomena and who have to solve practical protection problems.

About the Authors

Eduard M. Bazelyan and Yuri P. Raizer are esteemed figures in the field of electrical engineering and physics, particularly renowned for their contributions to the study of gas discharges and lightning phenomena.

Eduard Meerovich Bazelyan is a distinguished engineer and researcher specializing in grounding and lightning protection. He holds the title of Doctor of Technical Sciences and serves as a professor. Bazelyan is recognized as a leading expert in his field and has been a speaker in webinars focusing on grounding and lightning protection design.
His research encompasses various aspects of lightning physics and protection mechanisms. Bazelyan has authored numerous publications, including:

  • “Spark Discharge”: Co-authored with Yuri P. Raizer, this text provides a comprehensive and systematic description of the spark breakdown of long gas gaps.
  • “Lightning Physics and Lightning Protection”: Also co-authored with Raizer, this book presents an up-to-date review of lightning, its hazards, and protection techniques.

Additionally, Bazelyan has contributed to numerous research articles focusing on lightning attachment processes and the formation of lightning currents.

Yuri Petrovich Raizer (1927–2021) was a prominent Soviet and Russian theoretical physicist. He graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in 1949 and earned his Doctor of Sciences degree in 1959. Raizer served as a Senior Research Fellow at the Ishlinsky Institute for Problems in Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow and was a professor at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology from 1968.
Raizer’s work spanned various fields, including gas dynamics, low-temperature plasma, explosion physics, gas discharge physics, and the physics of lightning. He authored over 200 papers and several influential books, such as:

  • “Physics of Shock Waves and High-Temperature Hydrodynamic Phenomena”: Co-authored with Yakov Zeldovich, this work is a foundational text in the study of shock waves and high-temperature phenomena.
  • “Gas Discharge Physics”: This book serves both as a textbook for beginners and a handbook for specialists in plasma physics and gaseous electronics, covering various types of gas discharges.
  • “Laser-Induced Discharge Phenomena”: Explores the interactions between laser radiation and ionized gases.

Raizer’s collaboration with Bazelyan resulted in significant publications that have advanced the understanding of electrical discharges and lightning protection.
Their combined efforts have provided invaluable resources for researchers, engineers, and students involved in the study of electrical discharges and lightning phenomena.
